Description
Macrodiplodiopsidosis is a plant disease caused by fungi belonging to the Macrodiplodiopsidaceae family. These pathogens are known for causing necrotic lesions in various plant tissues, significantly impacting the structural integrity and physiological functions of woody plants, shrubs, and specific agricultural crops.
The fungus typically infects plants through wounds, bark damage, or pruning sites. Once established, the mycelium spreads within the plant tissue, leading to the destruction of vascular pathways. This eventually manifests as wilting, dieback of branches, and in severe cases, the death of the entire host plant if left untreated.
Visual symptoms often include the development of darkened, sunken patches on stems or trunks. As the infection progresses, tiny black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia appear under the epidermis. These structures serve as the primary release points for conidia, which spread the fungus further during periods of rain or high humidity.
Development and spread are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Warm, damp conditions are ideal for spore germination and colonization. Poorly ventilated plant stands and high density increase the risk of disease outbreaks, as the humidity stays trapped within the canopy for longer periods.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the spread and severity of the disease:
- Rigorous pruning of infected branches to remove the source of inoculum.
- Sterilization of pruning equipment to prevent mechanical transmission.
- Timely application of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during vulnerable growth stages.
- Maintenance of plant vigor through proper fertilization, irrigation, and thinning to improve airflow.
