Macrodiplodiopsis is a fungal pathogen belonging to the group of deuteromycetes, which primarily affects the bark and vascular tissues of woody plants. The pathogen thrives by colonizing necrotic tissues and disrupting the normal flow of nutrients within the plant. Understanding its biology is essential for identifying the initial stages of infection before significant damage occurs.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various ornamental and forest tree species. The fungus typically exploits entry points such as pruning wounds, frost cracks, or sites damaged by insects. Plants under physiological stress, such as those suffering from drought or nutrient deficiency, are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungus.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as distinct cankers and bark lesions. These areas often appear sunken and discolored, and in the advanced stages of the disease, small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia erupt through the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the cambium layer is destroyed, which often leads to branch dieback and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.
The spread and development of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors. Excessive moisture and mild temperatures act as catalysts for the rapid production and dissemination of conidia. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for moving spores from infected tissues to healthy host plants, making spring and autumn critical monitoring periods for growers.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach centered on strict sanitation. Removing and destroying all infected plant debris is crucial to reducing the inoculum level. Chemical control involving systemic fungicides applied to the canopy and trunk can protect vulnerable tissues, while maintaining optimal plant vigor through sound silvicultural practices remains the best long-term defense against colonization.
