Description
Magnaporthales is an order of Ascomycete fungi that includes several highly destructive plant pathogens. These fungi are primarily known for causing systemic and local diseases in cereals, with the most notable example being Magnaporthe oryzae, the causal agent of rice blast, which causes significant losses in rice production globally.
The disease process typically begins when fungal spores land on the plant surface and germinate, forming specialized infection structures called appressoria. These structures generate significant turgor pressure, allowing the fungus to mechanically breach the plant's cuticle and cell walls to initiate colonization of the host tissue.
Symptomatology varies significantly depending on the host and the specific species of the fungus. Common indicators include necrotic leaf spots, which often have grey centers and dark brown borders, root rot that leads to stunted growth, and sterile, bleached panicles in rice. In turfgrass, the disease often manifests as irregular brown patches.
Favorable conditions for development include high humidity, leaf wetness, and moderate to warm temperatures. Because these pathogens are soil-borne and can survive in crop residues for extended periods, they are particularly difficult to manage in continuous cropping systems where infected debris is not properly incorporated or destroyed.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers are encouraged to utilize resistant cultivars, practice crop rotation, and manage soil moisture. Chemical control is vital; prophylactic or curative applications of fungicides, particularly those containing strobilurins, triazoles, or SDHI inhibitors, remain the primary defense in commercial agriculture.
