Maize fine streak is a viral plant disease caused by the Maize fine streak virus (MFSV), which is classified under the genus Nucleorhabdovirus. This pathogen induces systemic infection in plants, significantly impacting physiological functions and overall crop health during the growing season.
The primary host for this virus is corn (Zea mays). The virus is known for its narrow host range and localized impact, yet it can cause severe economic losses in infested fields, particularly when vector populations are high during the early stages of plant development.
The characteristic symptom is the appearance of fine, chlorotic streaks on the leaves. These streaks are often narrow and intermittent, running parallel to the veins. Affected plants may exhibit reduced vigor, stunting, and reduced ear size, which directly affects grain yield and quality.
The transmission of Maize fine streak is facilitated by the leafhopper Graminella nigrifrons. The virus is acquired by the insect vector during feeding on infected plants and is transmitted in a persistent manner, meaning the vector remains infectious for its entire life cycle once the latent period is completed. Warm environmental conditions promote vector movement and virus spread.
Management strategies focus on vector control and reducing infection sources. Since there is no direct chemical cure for the virus itself, growers are advised to utilize insecticides to limit the population of leafhoppers, implement weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, and prioritize planting resistant maize hybrids as the most sustainable preventive measure.
