Description
Maize streak is a devastating viral disease caused by the Maize streak virus (MSV), a member of the Geminiviridae family. The virus is obligately transmitted by leafhoppers of the genus Cicadulina. It invades the plant's phloem, leading to systemic infection that severely compromises the physiological functions of the host plant.
The virus primarily affects maize, sorghum, and winter wheat. Beyond these cultivated species, many wild grasses serve as an essential reservoir, allowing the virus to persist in the environment throughout the year. The disease is particularly destructive when plants are infected at the seedling stage, which determines the overall potential yield.
The most distinct symptoms include narrow, continuous or interrupted chlorotic streaks running parallel to the veins of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the leaves may become entirely yellow or white. Infected plants show stunted development, reduced vigor, and a failure to produce normal ears or grain, often leading to a total loss of commercial value in susceptible crops.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of maize streak. High temperatures and drought conditions favor the population growth and mobility of Cicadulina leafhoppers. If these conditions coincide with the early vegetative stages of maize, the likelihood of a widespread epidemic increases exponentially.
Prevention and control strategies focus on integrated pest management. The deployment of genetically resistant or tolerant hybrids is considered the most effective long-term solution. Additionally, farmers are advised to avoid planting too close to old, infected crops, remove potential weed hosts around fields, and apply targeted insecticides to manage the population of the insect vectors during the critical stages of crop growth.
