Description
The Marasmiaceae family comprises various fungal species, some of which are significant plant pathogens. While many species are known as harmless saprotrophs, specific members of the Marasmius genus cause devastating diseases in crops, particularly in tropical and temperate agricultural systems, leading to severe economic losses.
The disease is primarily classified as root rot or vascular wilt, where the fungus penetrates the plant's root system. The pathogen blocks the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the collapse of the plant's metabolic functions. Some species, such as Marasmius perniciosus, are responsible for highly destructive diseases like Witches' Broom.
Symptoms often appear as gradual wilting of the plant canopy and the presence of white or mycelial cords around the base of the stem. As the disease progresses, necrotic tissues develop, often accompanied by foul-smelling decay in the roots. Under humid conditions, fruiting bodies of the fungus may emerge near the base of the infected plant.
The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture levels and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. The pathogen can persist in the soil for several years through mycelium or dormant structures, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once a field is contaminated without intensive agronomic intervention.
Effective management strategies include crop rotation, the use of disease-free planting material, and ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent stagnant water. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides targeted at soil-borne pathogens. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices, such as maintaining soil health and using resistant varieties, remain the most sustainable solutions.
