Description
Fairy ring mushroom (lat. Marasmius oreades) is a saprophytic fungus commonly associated with the formation of 'fairy rings' in lawns, pastures, and turf areas. While it does not primarily feed on living grass tissue, it acts as a significant physiological stressor for turf by altering soil properties and creating conditions unsuitable for plant growth.
The fungus develops by colonizing the soil, where it creates a dense mat of white mycelium. This mycelium often becomes hydrophobic, essentially sealing off the roots of the grass from essential water and nutrients. This disruption of the soil-water relationship is the primary reason for the decline and die-off of lawn grasses within the affected circles.
Symptoms are easily identifiable as distinct rings or arcs of stimulated grass growth (due to nitrogen release by the fungus) alternating with zones of stunted, yellowing, or dead turf. In advanced cases, the ring can span several meters in diameter and may produce visible clusters of small tan mushrooms during wet weather conditions.
Fairy ring development is favored by high organic matter content in the soil, poor drainage, and soil compaction. The fungus can persist in the soil for years, slowly expanding outwards as it exhausts the local organic supply, making it a persistent problem that requires consistent management efforts rather than a one-time treatment.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Regular core aeration to break up the hydrophobic layer and improve drainage.
- Thorough dethatching to reduce the accumulation of organic matter (thatch).
- Use of soil wetting agents (surfactants) to overcome hydrophobicity.
- Application of appropriate fungicides in early stages of ring development.
- Maintenance of proper fertility and deep irrigation to minimize drought stress on the turf.
