Marasmius sarmentosus is a fungus within the Marasmiaceae family that can act as a plant pathogen under specific environmental conditions. While primarily a saprotrophic organism that decomposes organic matter, it can transition to a parasitic role, attacking the roots and stems of various agricultural and ornamental plant species.

The causative agent is a basidiomycete fungus capable of producing extracellular enzymes that degrade plant cell walls. This disease primarily affects woody perennials and herbaceous plants, particularly those growing in high-density or poorly managed soils where organic debris accumulates near the base of the plant.

Symptoms of the infection include the presence of rhizomorphs or thin fungal threads surrounding the roots. Affected tissues typically show discoloration, ranging from light brown to dark brown, and become soft to the touch. As the infection progresses, the plant exhibits systemic stress, including leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and a gradual wilting that does not respond to regular irrigation.

Development and spread are facilitated by excessive soil moisture, poor aeration, and the presence of decomposing vegetation in the root zone. The fungus disseminates through spores spread by wind and water, as well as through direct physical contact between infected soil debris and healthy root structures. Temperature fluctuations and humidity play a critical role in the rate of mycelial growth.

The economic impact of this pathogen can be significant, leading to reduced plant vitality, lowered crop yields, and, in severe cases, plant mortality. To minimize damage, growers should implement rigorous sanitation practices, ensure adequate soil drainage, avoid over-irrigation, and apply targeted fungicidal treatments to the root zone if an active infection is detected.
