Description

The disease is caused by Maravalia cryptostegiae, a specialized fungus belonging to the order Pucciniales. This pathogen is globally recognized for its host-specific nature, acting as a potent biological control agent against the invasive rubber vine plant (Cryptostegia grandiflora).

The pathogen targets the foliage and stems of the rubber vine. Because of its narrow host range, Maravalia cryptostegiae does not affect agricultural crops or native vegetation, which makes it a highly valuable tool for managing invasive infestations without the need for synthetic chemical herbicides.

Symptoms begin with the appearance of chlorotic spots, followed by the development of bright orange to rust-colored pustules (uredinia and aecia) on the lower surface of leaves. As the infection progresses, severe defoliation occurs, significantly reducing the vine's photosynthetic capacity, vine vigor, and reproductive success in producing seeds.

The spread of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures that favor spore germination and infection. The rust spores are disseminated primarily by wind, allowing the disease to travel long distances and sustain epidemic levels within dense thickets of the weed.

In terms of management, the pathogen serves as a natural regulator of the rubber vine population. Current efforts focus on ensuring the establishment and optimal dispersal of the fungus to suppress the spread of the invasive host. Preventive measures are unnecessary in an agricultural context since the fungus is not pathogenic to crops.
