Lithium toxicity is a non-infectious physiological disorder caused by the accumulation of excessive lithium ions within plant tissues. The disease is commonly observed in greenhouse operations where environmental factors are highly controlled. Poinsettias are particularly susceptible to lithium-induced damage, which often manifests when the element is present as a trace contaminant in irrigation water, peat moss, or specific fertilizers.
The primary symptom is known as marginal necrosis, where the edges of the leaves develop chlorosis followed by rapid tissue death. The necrotized tissue typically turns brown or grey, creating a distinct burnt appearance that starts at the tips and leaf margins before progressing inward to the leaf blade.
