Massalongia is a genus of gall midges (family Cecidomyiidae) that functions as a significant plant pest. While often classified under entomological studies, the damage caused by Massalongia is frequently mistaken for plant diseases due to the development of characteristic galls on host plants, which significantly disrupt normal physiological growth.

The primary hosts for this pest include trees within the Rosaceae family, with apple trees being the most commonly affected species. The larvae of the midge settle within the leaf tissues, causing localized cell proliferation that forms distinct galls. This biological interaction redirects the plant's resources away from healthy development toward the maintenance of the gall structure.

Symptoms are easily identified by the presence of small, blister-like swellings or galls on the leaf surface. These galls are often pigmented, ranging from reddish to brown, and can cover a significant portion of the foliage. As the infestation progresses, the affected leaves may curl, undergo necrosis, or drop prematurely, weakening the overall tree vitality.
