Description
The Massariaceae family consists of ascomycetous fungi that primarily inhabit the woody tissues of various trees. While often functioning as saprobes, under conditions of plant stress, they can become opportunistic pathogens, contributing to branch dieback and bark necrosis in both forest and ornamental tree species.
The disease is caused by specific fungal pathogens classified under the order Pleosporales. The primary type of disease is bark necrosis and canker formation, which progresses as the mycelium colonizes the phloem and cambium layers, eventually disrupting the transport of water and nutrients within the branches.
Host plants commonly affected by Massariaceae include a wide range of broadleaved trees such as maples, oaks, and beeches. The economic impact is often seen in the loss of aesthetic value in urban landscapes and potential decline in tree vigor, leading to increased susceptibility to secondary pests and environmental extremes.
Symptoms are often manifested as localized sunken areas on the bark, accompanied by distinct fissuring. Over time, small, black, eruptive fruiting bodies emerge from the bark, signaling that the fungus has reached maturity. As the infection circles the branch, the distal part of the limb turns necrotic and eventually dies, leading to noticeable flagging within the canopy.
