Description

Massarina is a genus of ascomycete fungi that cause fungal diseases in a wide range of woody plants and shrubs. These pathogens are known for causing necrotic lesions on branches, stems, and sometimes leaves. The infection process is often slow, but it can lead to the gradual decline of the plant by compromising its structural integrity and metabolic processes.

The host range of Massarina includes various fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and some woody perennials. The fungus typically exploits entry points such as pruning wounds, winter damage, or sunscald. Plants that are already stressed due to poor soil conditions, nutrient deficiencies, or drought are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by these fungi.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as dark, sunken spots or localized cankers on the bark. As the disease progresses, these lesions can expand, causing the bark to split and the underlying wood to die back. During wet weather, tiny reproductive structures of the fungus, known as perithecia, may emerge from the infected tissue, appearing as small black bumps to the naked eye.

Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and frequent rainfall. The fungal spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water and wind. The pathogen persists in the environment by colonizing dead wood, fallen branches, and infected bark crevices, allowing it to remain a constant threat throughout the growing season.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. It is essential to prune out and properly dispose of all infected plant material to reduce spore load. The use of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during the dormant season is highly recommended. Promoting vigorous plant growth through proper fertilization and irrigation helps the plants resist infection.
