Mastigosporium leaf spot is a fungal plant disease caused by pathogens of the Mastigosporium genus. This condition is primarily classified as a type of foliar spot, affecting the photosynthetic surface of various grass species. It is a significant concern for both agricultural crop management and turfgrass health, as it limits the plant's ability to produce energy.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are various species of graminaceous plants. This includes forage grasses such as fescues, meadow grasses, and orchard grass. The disease can be particularly damaging in dense stands where the microclimate promotes the growth of the fungal mycelium on the leaf blades.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, elongated, or oval spots on the leaves. These lesions often exhibit a distinct border and may vary in color from light brown to greyish-tan as the infection progresses. In later stages, the fungal spores can be observed as tiny, dark structures within the center of the necrotic spots, often leading to chlorosis and dieback of the foliage.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically prolonged periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus thrives in cool, wet seasons. Dispersal of spores occurs mainly via rain splash and wind, allowing the infection to travel rapidly across a field if conditions remain favorable for fungal growth.
