Mastigosporium leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Mastigosporium kitzebergense. It primarily affects various species of grasses, particularly those used for forage and amenity purposes. This disease belongs to the group of foliar blights and is widely recognized for its impact on the photosynthetic capacity of host plants.
The visual symptoms of this infection are distinct: small, circular or oval spots appear on the leaves, often with a light-colored center and a dark, necrotic border. As the fungal infection advances, these spots coalesce, causing significant tissue death, yellowing, and eventually the browning and wilting of the entire leaf blades.
Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. Mastigosporium kitzebergense thrives in cool, moist climates with high atmospheric humidity. Dew, fog, and light rainfall create the necessary moisture for the conidia to germinate and infect healthy tissue, while wind gusts facilitate the long-distance transmission of fungal spores.
The economic harm caused by this pathogen is associated with reduced fodder yield and lower quality of hay or grazing grass. Severely affected plants show reduced vigor and decreased carbohydrate reserves in their roots, which makes them less competitive in a meadow ecosystem and more susceptible to winter injury or drought stress.
Effective management strategies for controlling the disease include:
- Cultivating resistant grass cultivars that demonstrate lower susceptibility.
- Implementing proper mowing practices to maintain optimal canopy aeration.
- Removing and destroying infected plant debris to minimize the source of primary inoculum.
- Ensuring adequate soil drainage to reduce micro-climatic humidity near the plant base.
While chemical control with fungicides is an option, especially in professional seed production or managed turf, it is often secondary to cultural management. A well-balanced fertilization program and rotational grazing also play a role in maintaining plant health, thereby reducing the prevalence of Mastigosporium kitzebergense in the field.
