Description

Mastigosporium leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Mastigosporium muticum, which primarily affects grasses of the genus Dactylis. As an important foliar pathogen, it can significantly reduce the nutritional value and biomass yield of orchardgrass (cocksfoot) in agricultural settings.

The pathogen specifically targets the leaves and leaf sheaths of host plants. By colonizing the leaf tissue, the fungus causes necrotic lesions, which interfere with the plant's physiological processes, leading to reduced photosynthesis and overall stunted growth during periods of high disease pressure.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, translucent spots that gradually enlarge and transition into brown or dark purple lesions, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Under high humidity, the centers of these lesions produce masses of conidia, giving the affected areas a dusty or greyish appearance.

The development of the disease is strictly climate-dependent, favoring cool, moist conditions with prolonged periods of leaf wetness. The fungus overwinters on debris or dormant tissue, allowing it to initiate new infections during the following growing season as soon as environmental conditions become suitable for spore germination.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the survival of the inoculum and protect the canopy:

  • implementing crop rotation to break the disease cycle;
  • removing crop residues through sanitation practices;
  • selecting resistant or tolerant orchardgrass cultivars;
  • applying systemic fungicides on seed crops if the disease threshold is reached during vulnerable growth stages.
