Mastigosporium leaf spot is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Mastigosporium rubricosum. This fungus primarily affects grasses, leading to the development of necrotic spots on foliage. It is a significant concern in both forage production and turfgrass management, especially in regions with cool and moist climatic conditions.

The primary hosts of this fungus include various species of perennial grasses. Specifically, fescue (Festuca species) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) are highly susceptible to infection. The disease often establishes itself in pastures, hay meadows, and grass seed fields where the microclimate is humid enough to support fungal sporulation and germination throughout the growing season.

The initial symptoms appear as small, scattered spots on the leaf blades. These spots typically develop a distinct light-colored center surrounded by a dark red or brown margin, giving the leaves a scorched appearance.
