Mastodiasis is a fungal disease caused by pathogens belonging to the genus Mastodia. This fungal organism acts as a parasite on various plant species, colonizing the host tissues and triggering necrotrophic development that disrupts metabolic processes and weakens the plant's structural integrity.
The host range of this pathogen includes various ornamental and agricultural plants. The infection typically establishes itself on the leaves, stems, or petioles, where the fungal hyphae penetrate the epidermis, exploiting the host's nutrients and causing localized death of plant cells.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of leaf spots. These lesions often start as small, discolored areas that enlarge and transition into necrotic brown or black spots. Over time, the affected areas may become dry and brittle, leading to leaf drop and decreased photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
The development and transmission of mastodiasis are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically moisture. Prolonged rain, high humidity, and poor air circulation within the canopy promote the germination of spores. Once established, the pathogen spreads through water splashes and air currents.
