Mastodiaceae is a family of lichenized fungi that often play a complex role in the ecological balance of agricultural environments. While they are not classified as primary agricultural pests that cause immediate crop destruction, their presence on the bark of fruit trees and woody perennials is a significant indicator of the orchard's microclimate condition.
The biology of these fungi involves a symbiotic relationship with algal partners, allowing them to thrive as epiphytes on the bark of various trees. They typically populate areas where the microclimate is stable, humid, and sheltered from direct harsh light, which effectively allows them to form persistent colonies on the host plant surface.
Symptoms of colonization include the appearance of distinct, often pigmented thalli on the surface of tree trunks and branches. These growths can vary from grey to greenish, and during periods of high humidity, they may appear swollen and prominent, often masking early stages of mechanical damage or cracks in the bark.
The primary environmental driver for the development of Mastodiaceae is prolonged high humidity paired with poor ventilation within the orchard canopy. When cultural practices fail to maintain adequate airflow, these fungi flourish, creating a protective moisture-retention layer on the bark that can harbor other, more detrimental pathogens.
Effective management focuses on preventive horticultural practices. Regular pruning to thin the canopy is essential to improve airflow and reduce humidity levels. Furthermore, mechanical scrubbing of affected bark surfaces followed by the application of copper-based fungicides or Bordeaux mixture serves as an effective control measure to suppress further spread and maintain tree vitality.
