Mattesiosis is an infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Mattesia. These pathogens are classified as obligate entomopathogens belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa, specifically targeting various insect species, particularly those considered pests in agriculture and stored products.

The causative agent develops inside the host insect, primarily invading the fat body and hemolymph. During its life cycle, Mattesia consumes the host's nutritional reserves to support the production of numerous spores. This process effectively depletes the host, causing systemic metabolic failure, loss of reproductive capacity, and eventual mortality.

The primary hosts of this parasite include several moth species (Lepidoptera) that infest stored grains and other agricultural commodities.
