Megalospora is a genus of crustose lichens and associated fungi that colonize the bark of woody plants. While primarily recognized as an epiphytic organism, its presence in high-density horticultural environments can become an agronomical concern, indicating poor tree management or excessive moisture.
The biological nature of these organisms involves an ascomycete fungus forming a symbiosis. They do not feed directly on the tree's internal tissues, but they physically occupy the bark surface, creating a barrier that affects respiration and provides a habitat for various insect pests and fungal pathogens.
Typical hosts include mature fruit trees, shade trees, and various ornamental species. Trees that suffer from structural decay or have slow-growing, rough bark are significantly more susceptible to colonization by these organisms compared to young, vigorous saplings with smooth bark.
Symptoms are identified by the development of thalli, which appear as patches or scale-like crusts on the trunks and main scaffold branches. As the colonization expands, the bark surface remains damp for longer periods, which can lead to localized bark tissue softening and secondary microbial infections.
Favorable conditions for the spread of Megalospora include high ambient humidity, heavy shade, and limited air movement within the tree canopy. These factors create a micro-environment that remains stable throughout the growing season, allowing the colony to persist and multiply over several years.
