Megaspora is a genus of fungi recognized in plant pathology for its presence on the bark and surfaces of various woody plants. While these organisms are often considered lichenized, in specific agricultural contexts, their unchecked growth can interfere with the physiological integrity of the host plant by blocking pores and altering the bark surface.
The primary hosts for Megaspora include various species of fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and occasionally perennial garden plants. It thrives primarily on woody stems and trunks, where it attaches itself to the outer layers of the bark, gradually expanding its territory through a complex network of fungal filaments.
Key symptoms of an infestation include the development of crust-like patches on the bark, which can vary in color from pale gray to earthy tones. Over time, these patches can become thickened and hardened, leading to localized cracking of the bark and potentially providing entry points for wood-boring pests or secondary fungal invaders.
The spread of this pathogen is strictly tied to environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and low airflow. In shaded orchards or areas with poor canopy management, moisture remains trapped against the bark for extended periods, creating the perfect environment for the rapid germination and colonization of Megaspora spores.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Regular pruning to ensure adequate sunlight penetration and airflow within the canopy is essential to limit moisture retention. Additionally, the application of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season helps eliminate existing colonies and protects the plant tissues from new infections.
