The Megasporaceae family comprises a group of lichenized fungi that, within an agronomic context, act as epiphytes or colonizers of tree bark and various plant substrates. While these organisms are not classic pathogens in the way agricultural blights are, their excessive growth can significantly weaken the physiological processes of host plants, particularly under unfavorable environmental conditions.
The causative agents are ascomycete fungi belonging to the Megasporaceae family. These organisms are highly adapted to symbiotic relationships, forming lichen structures with algal partners. In high humidity and polluted urban environments, they can alter the micro-environment of the bark surface, potentially compromising the host tree's ability to resist secondary opportunistic pathogens.
Primary hosts for these fungi include fruit trees in poorly maintained orchards, ornamental shrubs, and forestry trees. Weakened trees with existing bark damage are the most susceptible, as the accumulation of organic debris on the bark creates a nutrient-rich substrate for spore germination and mycelial development.
Symptoms typically manifest as crustose or foliose growths on the tree bark, altering its natural color and texture. In areas with significant fungal coverage, localized necrosis or thinning of the bark may occur, creating entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal infections that lead to deeper wood decay and structural instability.

If heavy colonization is observed, mechanical removal of the growths during the dormant season, followed by treatment with copper-based fungicides, is recommended to inhibit spore dispersal and restore bark health.
