Description

The fungus Melampsora abietis-canadensis is a heteroeceous rust pathogen. This means it requires two alternating hosts to complete its complex biological life cycle: species of Hemlock (Tsuga) and species of Poplar (Populus).

The disease primarily manifests through the production of fungal spores on both hosts. On hemlock, it typically produces aecia on the needles in the spring. Once the spores are released, they infect poplar leaves, where the fungus produces uredinia and telia, completing the cycle.

The most visible symptoms on poplar include the appearance of bright yellow or orange pustules on the undersides of the leaves. Severe infections lead to premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree, reduces its overall growth rate, and makes it more susceptible to environmental stressors and winter injury.

Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on weather conditions. High humidity, mild temperatures, and frequent rainfall are ideal for spore germination and infection. Wind currents carry the spores over long distances, facilitating the rapid spread of the rust within plantations or parks.
