The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Melampsora aecidioides, a specialized parasite classified within the order Pucciniales. It causes the disease commonly known as willow rust. This pathogen specifically targets the tissues of the willow tree, completing its life cycle by producing various types of spores that persist on both living plant tissues and fallen debris.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are various species of the genus Salix. The disease is particularly destructive in nurseries, plantations, and decorative landscapes where high humidity and poor air circulation occur. It is essential to monitor host plants closely during the spring and summer months to identify early stages of infection before the fungus spreads throughout the canopy.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as small, bright yellow or orange pustules on the undersides of the leaves. These structures are known as aecia, and they release fungal spores that can infect neighboring leaves. As the disease progresses, the leaves may show chlorosis, curl, and suffer premature abscission, leading to sparse foliage and an overall decline in tree health.
