Tsuga rust is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Melampsora farlowii, which specifically targets trees within the genus Tsuga (hemlock). As a basidiomycete fungus, it acts as a parasite that invades the host's needles and young shoots to extract nutrients. This process causes metabolic disruption and structural damage to the foliage of affected hemlock trees.
The primary hosts for this fungus include various species such as the Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). The disease is most frequently observed on the current season's growth. The fungus attacks developing needles and soft stems, where it completes its reproductive cycle during the growing season, often leaving visible evidence of its presence on the surface of the plant tissue.
Symptoms of an infection are characterized by the development of orange or rust-colored pustules on the needles and stems. As the infection progresses, the needles may wither, turn yellow, and drop prematurely.
