The fungus Melampsora hypericorum is the causative agent of rust disease affecting St. John's wort. This biotrophic pathogen belongs to the order Pucciniales and is specifically adapted to infect species of the genus Hypericum, completing its life cycle by extracting essential nutrients from the host's plant tissues.
The disease primarily impacts various species of Hypericum, including the medicinally significant Hypericum perforatum. Because the leaves and flowers of this plant are harvested for herbal preparations, the presence of the fungus significantly diminishes the marketable value and pharmacological potency of the raw plant material.
The symptoms of the infection typically appear as bright yellow to orange pustules on the abaxial (lower) surface of the leaves.
