Description

Melampsora magnusiana is a heteroecious rust fungus belonging to the Basidiomycota division. This pathogen requires two distinct host species to complete its complex biological life cycle, alternating between different types of vegetation throughout the growing season.

The primary hosts for this rust are various poplar species (Populus), which host the uredinial and telial stages. The alternate host, which is essential for the completion of the life cycle and spring infection, is the greater celandine (Chelidonium majus), where the aecial stage develops.

Symptoms on poplar leaves appear as bright orange or yellow powdery spots (uredinia) on the underside of the leaves during the summer months. Later in the season, these structures turn into dark brown or black telia. On celandine, the fungus causes visible yellowish swelling and distortion of the foliage early in the spring.

The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated by wind from the celandine hosts to nearby poplar stands, creating an efficient pathway for infection transmission.

The economic and ecological impact of Melampsora magnusiana includes premature defoliation and severe stress on poplar trees, which can reduce biomass production and weaken young saplings. Management strategies involve integrated pest control measures, such as removing debris, practicing sanitation in nurseries, and applying appropriate fungicidal treatments if the infection intensity reaches an economic threshold.
