Western poplar rust is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Melampsora occidentalis. This disease primarily affects trees of the genus Populus, causing leaf damage that can impair the overall health and growth rate of plantation-grown trees in specific temperate regions.

The disease cycle is heteroxenous, meaning it requires two unrelated host species to complete its life cycle. The rust fungus infects poplar leaves during the summer months, while the aecial stage typically develops on the needles of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), which acts as the alternate host in the pathogen's biological progression.

Initial symptoms on poplar leaves appear as small yellow or orange pustules known as uredinia on the underside of the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these pustules can merge, covering a significant portion of the foliage. This often leads to chlorosis, premature leaf drop, and in severe cases, branch dieback due to sustained nutrient deficiency.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of an outbreak. Warm, humid weather is highly conducive to the germination of fungal spores. Wind dispersal is the primary mechanism for the spread of Melampsora occidentalis across large distances, often allowing the fungus to infect entire nurseries or commercial woodlots within a single season.
