Description
Pine twist rust is a serious forest disease caused by the heteroecious rust fungus Melampsora pinitorqua. The pathogen relies on two different hosts to complete its life cycle: young shoots of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) serve as the host for the aecial stage, while various species of aspen (Populus tremula) host the uredinial and telial stages.
The primary hosts affected by this pathogen are young pine trees, typically between 3 and 10 years old. It is considered one of the most destructive diseases in forest nurseries and young plantations where pine and aspen occur in close proximity, leading to significant economic losses in timber production.
Symptoms of the disease become visible in the spring as young, growing pine shoots start to bend and twist, often forming an S-shape, which gives the disease its common name. Bright orange aecial pustules break through the bark of the shoots. Severe infection leads to the death of the terminal leader, causing the tree to become stunted, deformed, or entirely killed.
The development and spread of Melampsora pinitorqua are heavily dependent on climatic conditions. Humid and moderately warm spring weather provides optimal conditions for the germination of spores and subsequent infection. Wind-borne spores can travel over long distances, making the proximity of aspen stands a continuous risk factor for nearby pine forests.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Maintaining adequate spatial isolation between pine plantations and aspen stands.
- Removing aspen trees within or near pine nurseries to break the infection cycle.
- Selecting resistant pine cultivars for reforestation projects.
- Applying targeted fungicidal treatments in nurseries during the peak release of basidiospores.
