Description

The causal agent of this disease is the heteroecious rust fungus Melampsora ribesii-viminalis. This pathogen requires two different plant hosts to complete its complex life cycle, specifically species from the Ribes genus (currants) and the Salix genus (willows), alternating between them to ensure its survival.

The primary crops affected by this rust include black and red currants, as well as various species of willow trees and shrubs. Because the fungus cycles between these distinct hosts, integrated pest management is essential for growers who have both currant plantations and willow hedges in close proximity.

Diagnostic symptoms on currants appear in early summer as bright orange or yellow pustules, known as aecia, found on the undersides of the leaves. On the willow host, later in the season, the fungus produces uredinia and telia, which manifest as rust-colored spots that eventually cover the entire surface of the foliage.

The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity, heavy rainfall, and prolonged dew provide the necessary moisture for spore germination and infection. Wind currents act as the primary vector for distributing spores across large areas, making the disease difficult to contain.

The pathogenicity of this fungus is severe, primarily causing premature leaf drop. This defoliation severely impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize, resulting in reduced fruit yields, stunted growth, and significantly lowered winter hardiness, which can lead to the eventual decline of the plantation.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • Spatial isolation of currant crops from willow-infested areas.
  • Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying fallen leaf litter where the fungus overwinters.
  • Application of preventative fungicides during the early stages of spring growth.
  • Cultural practices like pruning and weed management to improve airflow and reduce humidity around the foliage.
