Melampsorella caryophyllacearum
Description
The causal agent of this disease is the rust fungus Melampsorella caryophyllacearum (Schröt.). This heteroecious pathogen completes its life cycle by alternating between fir trees (Abies) and various members of the Caryophyllaceae family, such as Stellaria and Cerastium species. On fir trees, the fungus acts as a systemic pathogen that induces abnormal growth.
The primary host for this fungus is the fir (Abies). It affects various species of fir in both natural forest stands and managed nursery settings. The presence of the alternate host plants in the surrounding ground cover is critical for the persistence of the disease, as the fungus requires these plants to produce basidiospores that infect the fir needles.
The most distinctive symptom of the disease is the formation of «witches' brooms» — dense clusters of stunted, thin, and upward-growing shoots originating from latent buds on infected branches. Additionally, the fungus causes perennial cankers on the main stem and branches, characterized by swelling and bark necrosis. During spring, bright orange aecia emerge on the underside of the needles within the broom.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and sufficient rainfall which facilitate spore dispersal. Once the fungus enters the host tissue, it becomes perennial, spreading slowly through the bark and wood. The internal mycelium allows the pathogen to survive harsh winters inside the tree host.
The damage caused by Melampsorella caryophyllacearum includes reduced tree vigor, diminished growth rates, and structural weakness of the wood. Severe infections can lead to top dieback or susceptibility to secondary pests, eventually resulting in tree death. Effective control measures focus on the physical removal and destruction of infected branches or trees and the management of the alternate host plants in high-value plantations.
