The causal agent belongs to the Melanconis genus, which acts as a pathogen leading to branch dieback and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. This disease is essentially a manifestation of bark necrosis often triggered by environmental stress.

Key host plants for this pathogen include chestnut, birch, alder, and walnut trees. The fungus typically gains entry into the woody tissue through open wounds, pruning cuts, or frost-cracked bark. Trees experiencing physiological stress, such as drought or poor soil conditions, are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungus.

Symptoms often include localized discolored patches on the bark, which eventually become depressed and necrotic.
