Melanconis canker is a serious fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Melanconis modonia. It is primarily known for causing necrosis in the bark and cambium layers of woody plants. As a parasitic pathogen, it thrives by colonizing the vascular tissues, effectively disrupting the nutrient and water flow within the host tree.
The primary host for this pathogen is the European chestnut (Castanea sativa). While healthy, vigorous trees are less susceptible, the fungus readily infects trees that have been stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, frost damage, or improper pruning. It serves as a classic opportunist pathogen in orchard environments.
The symptoms appear as sunken, dark-colored lesions on the bark of branches and main stems. As the infection progresses, the bark may crack, and distinct black fungal stromatic structures emerge through the surface. During periods of high humidity, these structures release spores that can be easily identified under microscopic examination.
Disease development is heavily influenced by environmental factors. High moisture levels, such as frequent spring rains or high humidity, stimulate spore production and dispersal. Wind and rain splash are the main vectors for moving the pathogen from infected wood to healthy tissue, making the management of the orchard climate and sanitation vital.
Control strategies for Melanconis canker focus on prevention and integrated management. Because chemical control is difficult once the fungus has penetrated deep into the wood, the following practices are essential:
