Melanconium canker of alder is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Melanconium apiocarpum. This fungus is responsible for necrotic lesions that affect the bark and cambium of various alder species, leading to branch dieback and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.
The disease primarily targets the woody tissues of alder. By colonizing the inner bark, the fungus disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, which causes the tree to weaken significantly. As the infection progresses, the structural integrity of the tree is compromised, making it susceptible to further environmental stress.
Visible signs of infection include dark, sunken areas on the bark surface and the emergence of characteristic black fruiting bodies. As the disease advances, the bark cracks and peels, often revealing deep cankers that expose the sapwood beneath.
