The Melanogastraceae family consists of fungi that produce hypogeous sporocarps, often found in close association with the root systems of trees and shrubs. In agricultural practice, they are observed as complex biological entities that can affect plant health depending on environmental conditions and the host's physiological state.

These fungi belong to the order Boletales. While many are beneficial mycorrhizal partners, in stressed or intensive farming environments, they can transition to a more competitive status, where their mycelial network disrupts the roots' ability to uptake water and essential minerals, negatively impacting crop yield.

Key symptoms of infection include chlorosis of leaves, stunted development, and a general decline in the plant's vigor.
