Melanohalea is a genus of foliose lichens that often colonizes the bark of deciduous trees. While not a pathogen that directly infects plant tissues like bacteria or fungi, it is often categorized within broader plant health discussions because its presence can indicate a decline in tree vigor. Lichens are symbiotic organisms, and their establishment on a tree indicates that the surface of the bark has become a stable, humid environment suitable for colonization.

This lichen is commonly found on various fruit and ornamental trees. It does not penetrate the cambium or extract nutrients from the tree's sap. However, in high-density populations, the lichen covers large areas of the trunk and branches, acting as a physical barrier. This coverage can inhibit gas exchange through lenticels, potentially stressing the host tree over long periods.

The visual symptoms of colonization include the appearance of brownish or olive-green leaf-like structures (thalli) that adhere tightly to the bark. These structures may appear to spread significantly over time. While they do not cause decay, the protected, moist space beneath the lichen mats serves as a harbor for overwintering pests, such as aphids, mites, and fungal spores that can lead to actual necrotic diseases.

Development and spread are favored by high humidity, poor air circulation, and low light conditions within the canopy. Orchards that lack proper pruning and maintenance provide the perfect niche for these epiphytes. Environmental stability and reduced competition from other organisms allow them to persist, particularly on older trees that have ceased rapid bark expansion, making the surface easier to colonize.

Management strategies focus on improving tree health and modifying the surface environment. Pruning to improve airflow and light penetration is the most effective preventative measure. For heavy infestations, mechanical removal with a wire brush or scraper during the dormant season is recommended, followed by the application of horticultural lime wash or copper-based fungicides to inhibit future growth and sanitize the bark surface.
