Plant Melanomma is a fungal disease caused by species within the Melanomma genus, with Melanomma pulvis-pyrius being a notable representative. These fungi act as necrotrophic pathogens that primarily target woody plants, colonizing bark and branches to disrupt the host's normal physiological functions.
The disease affects a wide range of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. Trees that have been weakened by environmental stress, poor nutrient availability, or mechanical injury are particularly susceptible. The fungus exploits these vulnerabilities to establish its mycelium within the living and non-living tissues of the host plant.
Symptoms are characterized by the darkening of the bark, which appears as if dusted with black powder due to the development of the fungus's fruiting bodies. Infected branches show signs of wilting, premature dieback, and cracks in the bark. If left unmanaged, the infection can spread along the limbs and significantly weaken the structural integrity of the tree.
The proliferation of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and moisture levels. Rain splashes and wind play a crucial role in the dissemination of spores across the canopy. Periods of prolonged damp weather facilitate the germination of these spores on any accessible plant surface, especially on old pruning wounds or frost-damaged areas.
