Glume blotch caused by Melanomma glumarum is a fungal disease that primarily affects the glumes of various cereal crops. As an ascomycete fungus, it plays a role in the complex of diseases affecting the ear of small grains, often reducing the overall vitality of the crop during the final stages of grain filling.

The disease targets wheat and other cereals, colonizing the glumes and sometimes the rachis. While it is often considered a secondary invader or a weak pathogen, under favorable conditions, it can become widespread, affecting the physiological functions of the ear and impeding grain development.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of dark, blackened areas on the glumes. Upon close inspection, one can observe numerous small, black, dot-like fruiting bodies (perithecia) scattered across the surface of the infected tissue. These structures are the hallmark of the fungus and indicate its active reproductive phase.

The development of Melanomma glumarum is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate rainfall during the heading and grain-filling stages. Moisture allows the perithecia to release spores, which are then disseminated by wind and splashing rain to healthy tissue.

The impact of the infection includes premature tissue senescence and grain shriveling. This leads to reduced test weight and overall grain yield. In severe cases, the visual quality of the crop is compromised, making it less suitable for milling and processing, and potentially reducing the viability of grain kept for future seed.

Control strategies emphasize integrated pest management. Key practices include:

  • Deep plowing to bury infested crop residues.
  • Implementing crop rotation to break the pathogen's lifecycle.
  • Applying foliar fungicides during the critical stages of ear development.
  • Using certified, disease-free seed stocks to minimize initial inoculum pressure.
