The causal agent, Melanomma populicola, is a fungus that persists in infected bark tissues. Its life cycle involves the production of perithecia, which release spores into the environment during periods of favorable weather conditions, such as high humidity or rainfall. These spores act as the primary inoculum, landing on wounds, pruning sites, or frost cracks on susceptible poplar trees.
