Melanopsammella vermicularioides is an ascomycete fungus recognized in phytopathology as a pathogen affecting the bark and woody tissues of various deciduous tree species. While often categorized as a saprotrophic organism, it frequently displays opportunistic parasitic behavior, capitalizing on weakened physiological states of host plants to colonize healthy tissue.

The host range of this fungus primarily encompasses deciduous trees, such as Fagus (beech), Carpinus (hornbeam), and various species of Betula (birch). It typically colonizes the cortical layers, where it disrupts the normal metabolic processes of the cambium, eventually interfering with the nutrient transport system of the plant.
