It typically functions as a weak or opportunistic parasite, capitalizing on plants that have been weakened by environmental stress or poor cultivation practices. The fungus can persist in the environment on dead organic matter, making it a constant threat in closed greenhouse ecosystems.
The primary hosts for this fungus include species within the Zamiaceae family, particularly Zamia plants. However, due to its versatile nature, it has been observed on various ornamental palms and succulents kept in high-humidity indoor environments. The pathogen specifically targets the foliar tissue, where it extracts nutrients and compromises the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively.
Symptoms of an infestation are characterized by the appearance of distinct dark or black lesions on the leaves. These spots often start as small, water-soaked areas before expanding into larger necrotic patches. As the disease progresses, the leaf tissue dries out, turns brittle, and eventually drops off, which can lead to significant aesthetic damage and loss of plant vigor.
The development of the fungus is heavily dictated by environmental humidity levels.
