The causative agent is a basidiomycete fungus that colonizes the vascular and parenchymal tissues of the host. Throughout its life cycle, the pathogen produces teliospores that accumulate within the plant's organs. As these spores mature, they exert pressure on the epidermis, leading to the formation of visible pustules or galls that eventually rupture to release the spores.
