Meliola is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Meliolales, responsible for a condition commonly identified as black sooty mold. These fungi are obligate biotrophic parasites, meaning they derive nutrients directly from living plant tissues using specialized penetration structures known as haustoria.
This disease primarily impacts a wide array of tropical and subtropical plant species, including citrus, coffee, mango, and various ornamental plants. While its occurrence is predominantly in warm, humid climates, Meliola can also become a significant concern in greenhouse environments where stable temperatures and high humidity foster fungal growth.
The primary symptom of a Meliola infection is the development of a dark, velvety mycelial mat on the surface of leaves, shoots, and sometimes fruits. Unlike typical saprophytic sooty molds, Meliola species create a dense network that attaches firmly to the host, often causing visible stress to the localized area of the plant.
The development of the disease is strictly linked to environmental conditions and the presence of insect vectors. High humidity and poor air circulation are critical factors. Furthermore, the presence of honeydew-secreting insects such as aphids, whiteflies, and scale insects creates an ideal substrate for the initial colonization of the fungal spores.
The economic impact of Meliola is characterized by the reduction of photosynthesis, as the black fungal layer blocks sunlight from reaching the leaf surface. This leads to weakened plants, reduced flower production, and premature leaf drop. Management involves a combination of controlling the insect population, applying specific fungicides, and adopting cultural practices such as regular pruning to improve air circulation within the plant canopy.
