Description
Meliola bicornis is a parasitic fungus belonging to the order Meliolales. It is widely recognized as an agent that causes sooty mold, a condition where the surface of leaves and stems is covered by a dark, charcoal-like fungal mat, primarily affecting various plant species in tropical and subtropical regions.
The host range of this fungus is quite broad, affecting numerous woody plants and ornamental shrubs. Its prevalence is often secondary to the activity of sap-sucking insects like aphids, whiteflies, and mealybugs. These insects secrete honeydew, a sugary substance that provides an excellent nutrient source for the fungal colonies to establish and grow.
The visual symptoms appear as a dense, black, powdery, or crusty coating on the foliage. Although the fungus is technically epiphytic and does not penetrate deep into the plant tissues, the thick layer of mycelium significantly restricts photosynthesis, gaseous exchange, and transpiration, leading to stunted growth and leaf drop.
Development and dissemination of Meliola bicornis are strictly linked to high humidity levels and warm temperatures. Spores are easily dispersed by wind, splashing water from rainfall, or by human handling during maintenance practices. In poorly ventilated areas or dense plant canopies, the infection can cover an entire plant within a short period.
Effective management and prevention of the disease are primarily focused on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Key strategies include:
- Controlling insect populations to eliminate the honeydew source.
- Pruning branches to increase airflow and sunlight penetration within the canopy.
- Applying appropriate copper-based fungicides when infection levels are high.
- Maintaining optimal plant nutrition to ensure vigorous growth and natural disease resistance.
