The causative agent Meliola capsicola is a fungus responsible for a type of sooty mold infection. Unlike obligate plant pathogens that infect plant tissue directly, this fungus primarily grows as an epiphyte on the surface of plant leaves, stems, and fruits.

This disease primarily targets pepper plants (Capsicum). The pathogen is particularly prevalent in humid and warm environments where air circulation is poor, allowing the fungus to thrive on leaf surfaces covered in organic debris or insect excretions.

The primary symptom is the appearance of a dark, velvet-like coating on the foliage. This layer of mycelium blocks essential sunlight, effectively suffocating the plant by impeding the normal process of photosynthesis. Over time, the affected areas may appear blackened, covering significant portions of the canopy.

The harm caused by Meliola capsicola is indirect but significant. By reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the pepper plant, the fungus stunts growth, reduces fruit quality, and can lead to premature leaf drop. It is often associated with heavy infestations of aphids or whiteflies that produce honeydew.

Effective management includes:

  • Rigorous pest control to eliminate aphids and whiteflies that provide the honeydew substrate.
  • Improving air circulation and sunlight exposure through proper spacing and pruning.
  • Regular sanitation to remove heavily infested debris from the field or greenhouse.
  • The application of registered fungicides if the infection becomes severe enough to threaten yield.
