Meliola carapae is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Meliolales, commonly associated with the development of sooty mold on various tropical and subtropical tree species. Unlike parasitic fungi that invade deep into host tissues, this organism primarily colonizes the surface, creating dark, velvety colonies on leaves, twigs, and fruit.

This fungus typically targets plants within the Meliaceae family, specifically those in the genus Carapa. Its distribution is closely tied to humid environments, such as tropical rainforests or plantation settings where high ambient humidity and temperature provide ideal conditions for the survival and dispersal of fungal spores.

The primary symptom of infestation is the emergence of black, superficial mycelial patches on the upper leaf surface. The fungus uses specialized structures called hyphopodia to anchor itself firmly to the leaf epidermis, allowing it to extract nutrients from the surface rather than invading the internal plant vascular system. The presence of the fungus is often a strong indicator of prior insect infestation.

Development is highly dependent on the presence of honeydew-secreting insects, including aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects. These pests provide a carbohydrate-rich substrate that the fungus requires for rapid colonization. Stagnant air and excessive shade within the canopy further promote the spreading of Meliola carapae, as they prevent leaves from drying out and increase the duration of surface moisture.

The economic impact is primarily related to the impairment of plant vigor. By covering the leaf surface, the black mold significantly reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the tree, leading to stunted growth, premature leaf drop, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors. Management focus should be directed at controlling the insect vectors and maintaining cultural practices that improve air circulation and light penetration.
