Meliola clusiae is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing a type of sooty mold infection on ornamental plants. As an obligate parasite, it colonizes the surface of leaves and stems, forming dark, velvety mycelial mats that compromise the health and aesthetic value of the host plant.

The primary host for this fungus is the genus Clusia. The pathogen thrives in humid, stagnant environments where temperature and moisture levels remain consistently high, making it a common concern in tropical horticulture and greenhouse management where environmental control is suboptimal.

Symptoms are easily identified by the presence of dense, black, soot-like growth on the foliage. While the fungus does not typically penetrate deep into the plant tissues, the thick layer of mycelium creates a physical barrier that blocks light, severely inhibiting photosynthesis and leading to leaf chlorosis, premature abscission, and overall stunted development.

The disease cycle is inherently linked to sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. These pests secrete a sugary substance known as honeydew, which serves as a necessary nutritional source for Meliola clusiae spores to germinate and colonize the leaf surface, effectively linking the fungal growth to pest infestation.
