Meliola dracaenae is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for a type of leaf disease known as sooty mold. Unlike systemic diseases, this fungus is an epiphyte that lives on the surface of host leaves, typically thriving in environments where sap-sucking insects are present.
The primary hosts for this fungus are species within the Dracaena genus, as well as related plants like Cordyline. It is commonly found in greenhouses, conservatories, and indoor settings where air circulation is limited and humidity levels remain consistently high.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as a velvety, charcoal-black coating on the surface of the leaves. This fungal mat can often be wiped off manually. However, its presence is a clear indicator that the plant is suffering from an underlying infestation of scale insects, mealybugs, or aphids that secrete honeydew.
The development of Meliola dracaenae is entirely dependent on the presence of honeydew and high humidity. While the fungus does not directly digest the plant tissues, it creates a physical barrier that restricts gas exchange and intercepts sunlight, causing significant stress to the host plant.
