Meliola panici is a specialized fungal pathogen categorized under the order Meliolales, often referred to as black mildew or sooty mold. This fungus functions primarily as an epiphyte, colonizing the surface of plant tissues. It is highly adapted to utilize organic nutrients present on leaf surfaces, frequently deriving them from honeydew produced by sap-sucking insects.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Poaceae family, particularly grasses within the Panicum genus. While not always directly destructive to the plant's internal vascular system, the fungus creates a physical barrier that impacts the host's normal physiological activities. It is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor both insect populations and fungal growth.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of dark, velvety, or crust-like fungal colonies on the leaves and stems of the host plant. These colonies are composed of dense mycelial networks. Unlike surface dust, this growth is firmly attached to the leaf epidermis and cannot be easily removed without causing damage to the underlying tissue.
